Workshop Details
The Washington Data Workshop series will be held in September-October 2023 from 3:30-5:00pm PST via Zoom. Tuesday sessions will be focused on presenting new information and tools. Thursday sessions will be focused on practical application of the information and tools to businesses, with break out sessions where the participant’s businesses are the main focus.
Week 1: What is data analytics? How can data be used in innovation and resiliency in all industries (manufacturing, retail, medical, etc?)
Week 2: How to get started. How can small businesses, including start-ups with little to no data collected, start to use data to make decisions? How can you create a business culture that values data, evidence-based decision-making, and that is open to changing course?
Week 3: What data is available? What data tools are available for collection, management, and analyses?
Week 4: Should I hire or contract with a data analyst or data analysis company? Or should I train myself and/or staff in data analytics?

Why is the workshop important for business?
Isn’t data analytics for technical individuals?
While coding and the like can be left to programmers and statisticians, having a basic understanding regarding how data can be used and what it can tell us can help small businesses make informed, evidence-based decision making. You do not have to be an expert at software or math in order to use data analysis to make innovative decisions.
Who should attend the workshop?
The workshop’s target audience is leaders and management at small to medium sized businesses in Northwest Washington.
What are the objectives?
The objectives of the course are to provide business leaders with foundational information regarding how data can be used to increase innovation and resiliency in businesses processes. As part of this, participants will get acquainted with the types of problems data can solve, the types of data and data tools available in today’s market, as well as information regarding how to hire a data company or a data analyst.
What will I get out of the Workshop?
In addition to an introduction to the practicalities of data and data analytics in business, each weekly workshop session will include time for business leaders to apply what they learned to their individual business. This will allow immediate implementation of concepts and give leaders the opportunity to use their own real world examples when deciding what types of data and data tools might be most suitable for their business in the future.
Will I get any sort of certification by attending?
There is no accredited certification (from a university), however, we can offer a certificate of completion for Human Resources purposes upon request. This is not a for credit course.

What are the times and commitments for attendees?
The workshop will run in Jan-Feb 2023. Each workshop will be 4 weeks with weekly meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 – 5pm for a total of 12 contact hours.
How much does it cost?
For each business (The listed fee provides for up to 2 employees per business):
Fewer than 25 employees | $750 |
Between 25 – 50 employees | $1000 |
Over 50 employees | $1500 |

Who will be leading the workshop?
Jennifer Noveck, Ph.D. has a decade of experience utilizing data in a wide variety of fields. In addition she holds a certificate from the University of Washington’s Center for Statistics in the Social Sciences. She is joined by data analytics experts and small business executives to share their experiences with the role of data as the foundation for building innovation into the success of your business.
How long is the workshop and what days and times will it be held?
The workshop is a weekly commitment of three hours for 4 consecutive weeks. A total of 12 hours commitment. It will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 – 5pm PST of the scheduled months.

The following fee is stated per business. 2 individuals can attend from each business.
